WeightControl.com: What are the main findings?
Response: Older individuals with a weight loss of 5-10% had a higher risk of all-cause mortality: 33% for men and 26% for women. Weight loss of more than 10% increased the risks even further. Weight loss was associated with increased mortality risks in cancer, cardiovascular disease, and non-cancer non-cardiovascular disease, while weight gain had no association with mortality.
WeightControl.com: What should readers take away from your report?
Response: A small weight loss of 5%, especially in the absence of any evident disease, can significantly increase the risk of mortality, especially among older men. It is important for both older individuals and their doctors to be aware of this association.
WeightControl.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?
Response: We need more research to better understand the link between weight loss and the development of fatal diseases, as well as to determine whether clinical or laboratory investigations can help identify individuals who may benefit from early intervention.
WeightControl.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Any disclosures?
Response: We express our gratitude to the participants who took part in this study. Additionally, we would like to acknowledge the support of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Early Career Fellowship (APP1142198) awarded to Dr. Hussain and the NHMRC Leadership Fellowship (IG 1173690) that supports Professor McNeil.
