Increased BMI in Teens Whose Parents were Obese in Adolescence

Knowing that offsprings of parents with obesity are at a greater risk than other children for being overweight at adolescence, the question remains what are the epigenetic factors that affect obesity.

Response: We found that parental BMI can explain  39% of the variance of the BMI at age 17. Therefore, children to parents that were overweight or obese during adolescence are likely to become overweight in their teenage.

Response: Knowing that offsprings of parents with obesity are at a greater risk than other children for being overweight at adolescence, the question remains what are the epigenetic factors that affect obesity. In this aspect, it is interesting to explore why mother’s BMI and father’s BMI at age 17 have a similar association with child’s BMI at age 17, while it is known that maternal nutrition is linked to epigenetic changes that can affect the fetus.

Response:  This study is part of a large series of studies led by Prof. Gilad Twig that uses Israeli military recruitment data to assess the prevalence of obesity in adolescence and its complications.  No disclosures.
