Women Increasingly Using Weight Loss Meds Shortly After Giving Birth

This shift has happened incredibly fast, and many clinicians may not realize how common postpartum GLP-1 use has already become.

WeightControl.com:   What are the main findings?

Response: Use went from almost zero to a sharp rise in just a few years. Today, about 1.1% of new Danish mothers start Wegovy within six months after birth — roughly 650 women a year. Most were already overweight before pregnancy, and only a minority had diabetes, so the main purpose was weight loss.

WeightControl.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: The big message is speed: The uptake has surged, but the knowledge hasn’t caught up. The postpartum period is a time of major hormonal shifts, natural weight loss, and breastfeeding — and we still don’t fully know how these medications interact with that. Semaglutide does not seem to appear in breast milk, which is reassuring, but many other questions remain.

WeightControl.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: We urgently need studies that look at postpartum physiology, breastfeeding, milk production, and milk composition. Even small changes could matter for infants. We also need real-world safety data so clinicians can give clear, confident guidance.

WeightControl.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Any disclosures?

Response: This shift has happened incredibly fast, and many clinicians may not realize how common postpartum GLP-1 use has already become. Better evidence is essential to support women during a vulnerable time.
