ObesityWeek: GLP-1 Therapy Increases Fat Metabolism as Well As Making You Eat Less

Treatment of obesity is more complicated than simply eat less and move more –  and these newer GLP-1 based therapies are increasing fat tissue metabolism as well as making you eat less.

WeightControl.com:   What are the main findings?

Response: GLP‐1 analog treatment does increase visceral adipose tissue (VAT) metabolic activity in the patients we studied. The degree of increase correlated with the amount of weight lost and low VAT metabolic activity at baseline was a predictor of good response to treatment with GLP‐1 in our study.

WeightControl.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: Treatment of obesity is more complicated than simply eat less and move more –  and these newer GLP-1 based therapies are increasing fat tissue metabolism as well as making you eat less.

WeightControl.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: More work on the mechanism of GLP‐1  regulation of VAT metabolic activity is needed to inform our understanding of the how these newer gut hormone based agents impact on weight change. Understanding this might help with product development that minimises the side effects of nausea and constipation while maximising the treatment benefits for obesity.
