Intermittent Fasting Plus Exercise Can Reduce Help Decrease Liver Fat

Fatty liver disease puts people at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

WeightControl.com:   What are the main findings?

Response: We found that liver fat was reduced by 5.5% in the group that participated in both fasting and exercise. This combination group also reduced body weight by 5%, fat mass, waist circumference, and liver enzyme (ALT) levels. We also saw increases in insulin sensitivity in the combination group, indicating better blood sugar control.

WeightControl.com:   What is the significance of fatty liver disease?
What should readers take away from your report?

Response: Fatty liver disease puts people at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, so these improvements in blood sugar regulation are very promising. Taken together, these findings show that intermittent fasting plus exercise can help decrease liver fat and lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in people with NAFLD.

Moreover, the degree of liver fat reduction in our study was similar to that of traditional daily calorie plus exercise. So it’s likely that people can use intermittent fasting instead of daily calorie counting to get these same benefits.

WeightControl.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: The study was only 3 months long. I think the next step would be to run longer term trials in this area (6-12 months long). This will help us determine if these improvements can be sustained over longer periods of time.
