Gender Differences in Core Body Temperature

gender differences in cold perception

WeightControl.com:   What are the main findings?

Response: The main findings of this study suggests that healthy young women and men share many common adaptive mechanisms such as vasoconstriction and increased metabolic rate when faced with an ambient cold stress, but there are measurable differences in core body temperature.

WeightControl.com: What should readers take away from your report?

Response: We did find some variations in the thermal physiology of women and men, but not in all the ways the popular press has highlighted previously. Many of the variations can be explained by differences in body size and composition rather than sex, suggesting the women were equally or perhaps better adapted to mild cold ambient air than the men in our study.

WeightControl.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work?

Response: Future research should be directed at quantifying different measures of human thermal physiology under normal living conditions and heterogeneous populations.

Disclosure:  This is a part of a larger ongoing study that is funded by the NIH Intramural Research Branch
